I’ve wasted hours upon hours of my life reading self-help and personal development books trying to figure out how to motivate myself to do things I don’t want to do.
The answer is there is no answer. Sometimes in life, you have to do things you don’t want to do.
The other day I woke up feeling like crap. My body was sore and stiff but I knew if I got a workout in I’d feel better but I didn’t want to do it. It was a Sunday, football was on and I just felt like lying around all day.
I decided I’d make myself go down to the garage, where I work out, and just do something. I started off doing 1 set of each exercise that I normally do. I took my time and my intensity was pretty low but I got it done.
I was ready to quit after that but I then decided that I’d just go for a quick jog. I jogged around the neighborhood for about 15 – 20 minutes and then came home.
I was ready to be done again but as I walked into my house my dog stared me down. He hates it when I go for a walk or jog around the neighborhood without him. I decided I’d then take him for a quick walk.
The quick walk ended up turning into a 2-mile walk. I was physically feeling pretty good at this point. Much better than I had felt earlier.
So all in all I ended up doing 1 set of 6 different weight lifting exercises, jogging for 1-2 miles, and then walking another 2 miles. I’ve had better days of exercise but not too bad considering I had 0 desire to do anything just a bit earlier.
I just decided I’d go down to the garage and do something. Just something small. It ended up turning into something productive.
